The Rastafarian-influenced Jamaican reggae which evolved from Rocksteady, of which Bob Marley is the quintissential example. Roots is a spiritual "conscious" music with recurrent themes of Jah, poverty, oppression and resistence. The "one drop" riddim is the classic musical component. Popular in the 70s and early 80s, it is enjoying an extensive global renaissance, and has a greater influence than any subgenre of Reggae at present. --bahilman27
