Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne and Billy Holiday were all prime examples of Vocal Jazz performers. Blues and ballads; scat and bebop; each had their own distinctive sound and repitoire. Generally, they performed at clubs, touring with small instrumental ensembles, but sometimes on large stages accompianied by orchestral big-bands. They sang of love and betrayal; desire and fulfillment; sorrow and joy. -- rgouldtx
