Characterized by close harmony and quartet-style singing, Southern Gospel music got its start in southern U.S. churches. Song book publishers would send out all-male quartets to sell their song books and to teach people how to sing shaped-note music. These groups became very popular and known for their style and presentations leading to contracts, recordings and appearances on southern radio stations and at all-day church sings. --kingsman
