Avant Garde has its roots in abstract sonic art experiments of the Dada movement immediately following World War I. The music utilizes conventional and non-conventional electronic and non-electronic sources. Leading "old school" composers include Edgar Varese, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and John Cage.
