Synonymous with World War II, Big Band jazz emerged in the 1930s from roots in Dixieland and dance music, infused with the energy of pioneer black bands of the 20s. Famous leaders included Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong. The WWII draft broke up most bands, and after the war, touring with large groups was too expensive. --torgen_magnusson
