Nanocosm Strengthens Outlook with Key Executive Hires
Chief Marketing Officer and General Counsel Arrivals Bring Strategic Leadership to Growing Start-up

Foster City, California, August 5th, 1999 – Nanocosm, Inc., a leading provider of rich media personal Web services, today announced the arrival of Chief Marketing Officer, Michele Hickford and General Counsel, John O. Jeffrey. Strong strategic and corporate backgrounds accompany both Hickford and Jeffrey as they enter into the Nanocosm executive fold. Each has built successful careers in both on-line and media ventures.

Hickford fills the role of Chief Marketing Officer fresh off the successful IPO of Autoweb.com, the leading automotive e-commerce site. As Autoweb's marketing VP, Hickford was instrumental in the brand development, positioning and partnership efforts of this high profile automotive portal.

Hickford brings a wealth of consumer marketing expertise, along with experience building both new and established brands in media and packaged goods. She launched the Sci-Fi Channel in Europe as VP Marketing, and was VP, Marketing and Research for Turner International. Hickford began her career in packaged goods at the Clorox Company and then made an unusual, but successful transition to advertising, where she created and produced award-winning campaigns for Foote, Cone and Belding. Michele's overall management expertise will be a cornerstone of Nanocosm's strategic marketing and business planning efforts.

As Nanocosm's first General Counsel, Mr. Jeffrey will oversee all of the company's legal and business affairs, and will initially focus on strategic partnerships and investment relationships. John brings eleven years of broad-based legal and entertainment business affairs experience to Nanocosm. Prior to joining the Nanocosm team, he was Director and Senior Counsel of Legal Affairs at Discovery Communications, Inc. (which operates Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, Discovery Health, and et. al).

While at Discovery, John was primarily responsible for content production agreements for all of Discovery's networks worldwide. Between 1995 and 1997, he was the Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for the TCI-owned broadband Internet and interactive television studio, AND Interactive. During that time, Mr. Jeffrey was part of TCI Interactive's investment team, which made early strategic investments in CBS Sportsline, IVillage, and @Home. Between 1993 and 1995, John provided business and legal advice on the start-up team at Fox Television for the launch of television networks, FX and FX/M. A member of the California Bar, John practiced law at private firms in Los Angeles from 1988 to 1993.
