Live365 Joins the Industry-Wide June 26th "Day of Silence"

FOSTER CITY, CA -- 06/25/2007 -- Live365 joins the SaveNetRadio Coalition's Day of Silence scheduled for Tuesday, June 26, 2007, despite the obvious impact it will have on taking its 10,000 broadcasters off the air.

Jason Stoddard, Live365's director of broadcasting, commented, "Live365 will go silent on Tuesday, June 26th, as part of an industry-wide "Day of Silence." After speaking with dozens of Live365 broadcasters, I believe they are willing to participate in this event to draw attention to impending royalty rates that threaten to shut down Internet radio. "During the Day of Silence, in lieu of music programming, we will be interspersing public service announcements in our broadcasters' own voices within the silence. We will be explaining the day of silence as well as urging listeners to call or write Congress. It would be a tragedy if the proposed excessive rates silenced Live365 broadcasters forever." Mark Lam, CEO of Live365, warned: "Not only will the Day of Silence mimic the future of Internet radio under the Copyright Royalty Board-imposed royalty rates, but we also believe that in the long term, if the new rates are enforced by SoundExchange, it will push small broadcasters off of legal Internet radio platforms, effectively stopping royalty payments. Ironically, SoundExchange would see increased illegal broadcasting and lower royalty revenues."

Background on Live365 and the copyright royalty issue:

Established in 1997, Live365 is the world's largest Internet radio network that hosts nearly 10,000 stations and streams music to nearly 5 million listeners a month. Its mission is to make it affordable and easy for individuals to start their own radio stations and share their love for music to listeners around the world. On March 2nd, 2007, the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) increased sound recording royalty rates which now threaten to bankrupt Internet radio stations like Live365. Live365 has joined other Internet radio companies to protest the unjust royalty rates which are not levied on other radio media like satellite or AM/FM radio. Live365 has always paid royalties to songwriters, copyright holders, and musicians and adheres to all applicable laws.
