While in High School, I ran across 'The Eternal Rock Show' on KCMS one Sunday morning right after church. Resurrection Band, Michael Omartian, Larry Norman, and others offered the alternative I sought - and regular Christian radio was (and still is) generally drab and droll... Now, 25 years later, KCMS offers little of consequence for teens and young adults. That leaves internet radio I suppose.

  That next year I had an opportunity to prepare a unit on Poetry in my English class and was able to bring the lyrics and music of Resurrection Band and Michael Omartian into school to share with my friends. My parents supported my expanded interest in music and bought me a mixer from Radio Shack for a dance I dj'ed at Church in 1981. Not that there was much dance-oriented music to work with then...

  At Texas A&M the following year, I had an opportunity to create mix tapes of alternative Christian music for a series of 'I Love Jesus Parties' held at an adjacent dorm. Then one afternoon I was playing Sheila Walsh a bit too loud from my room and met David Heath. His record collection rivaled mine at the time and between us there was enough music to work with to apply for a radio segment on the student radio station. Every week I'd borrow some of his records to add to mine and throw them into a crate on a Radio Flyer wagon and trundle over to the station at 3:30am for my 4:00am show. No one was awake to notice me going to the station, but I got some funny looks on the way back to the dorm at 8:00am...red wagons stand out in college.

  After returning to Texas A&M following a Co-Op stint in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - and armed with an expanded music collection - I hosted a new radio segment. That 1985 show is highlighted on this station. By then, cd’s were starting to appear and I tried to buy these instead of vinyl when I could. There were logistical challenges though. The station didn’t have a cd player so I had to bring mine for the show and swap out cables.
