I have been involved in radio on a part-time basis since December of 1979 at 16 years old. I grew up listening to Louisville powerhouses WAKY and WKLO. This was when AM ruled and FM was little brother. I always had a transistor radio to my ear when I was a kid and I looked at the dj's as my friends...always there. I knew this is what I wanted to do with my life.
My association with WIEL began, though after high school graduation when I worked at the sister country station. I later went to work for her and her subsequent sister stations in 1999 and did so until 2010. She is now no longer on the air, other than as a 'repeater' for a nearby ESPN affiliate. WIEL was an unusually powerful AM station with excellent programming for especially a small market station, and given we're only 45 minutes from a huge metropolitan market (Louisville).
