I'm a trained musician (drummer/keyboardist/dj/producer). I started playing drums at the age of 16. I first discovered soul/funk music at the age of 13 through my brothers tapes which he used to hide from me. As I got older and started working the record collecting thing started by having a conversation with a guy about the very rare "BLACK ALBUM' by prince. I went to the vip record fairs in camden where i was told i could get this and naturally picked up other records for very little money. This place became a regular fixture soon after. About the same time whilst going home from school everyday in the woolworths music department (tapes at the time) I discovered a tape that caught my eye "THE BEST OF EARTH WIND AND FIRE VOL 1". I did'nt buy this at first but eventually after continuously seeing this i felt it be in my fate to finally buy this cassette. I did and since then i've been a very serious earth wind and fire fan ever since but listening to their sound opened up a lot of other genres and artists for me. it was clear to me i had a real love with soul/funk music and all the other related styles to follow. Still collecting records today. The dj thing was quite interesting. A friend of mine was having a do at I think it was called then "SPIRIT" bar in barbican and asked me if i knew anyone who could dj for her. I met this friend whilst doing gigs with my covers band called streetlife(soul/funk covers) at the time. And we met by accident to. i said i'd give it a go so got my old SOUL/FUNK/DISCO 12"s and lps and just started spinning them and it went down fairly well. Since then i got into doing wedding/club/function gigs but something was still missing. I really wanted to share my musical tastes with people everywhere. After a fairly good run with club nights I was'nt sure which direction to go in to make this sort of thing work. A very dear friend of mine "BEN EMMANUEL" suggested i start an internet radio station. I was quite baffled to begin with but nevertheless was determined to see what its all about and now here i am. The bollywood thing was quite interesting. I remember watching bollywood films as a kid and do remember some pretty funky music in them goin back to the 70/80s genre. As i grew up i drifted out of that scene. Then one day whilst reading a copy of the metro newspaper i saw a compilation called "BOLLYWOOD FUNK". I knew i had to get this just to hear what the sound really was. i got it and it just blew me away. I knew i needed much more. A very significant thing that happened then was a friend of mine asked me to go to a bollywood club night called KUCH KUCH with her. Going to this one event changed many things for me and bollywood. So for dj ing i started accumalating many cds but that was not enough. I was always fascinated by the bollywood lps from yester year just to collect at first but eventually to acquire the funky music that is forgotten or never heard on many of the more rare of sountracks. So I collected vinyls and cds. After listening to the composers of bollywood films of that era i started to learn about their music styles and what kind of sound they brought to the table. Fortunately I got alot of these on cd as well. Hence the collection keeps growing at a steady pace. I always believe from a musical perspective to give people access to music that they would not otherwise hear. I feel this is the best way to celebrate on a collective basis the music of those underheard bollywood composers on a broad and accessible scale which certainly changed my life. Ps i have to give a special shout out to all those record collectors on ebay i've acquired amazing bollywood records from over the years and the various indian music and dvd shops in north london and India/USA where i got my cds/dvds from. Well there you have it. Thats pretty much my story.
