WHERE IT ALL BEGAN:

My mother and father were both music junkies. My mother was a go-go dancer and a singer when she was in her early 20s and my father was voted best dancer in high school. While in my mother's womb, I think I became addicted to the sound of music. Ever since then musical settings have often been where I've seen the magical transformation of people, both individually and collectively! This is what inspires me to DJ, the endless possibilities for transformation.

DJING:

I strongly believe it's not what you do, but how you do it! I am a DJ for two reasons:
1) I love music. I am not a turntablist, I can't scratch like Q-Bert! BUT I know what moves a crowd. I know what can make people happy and that to me is the greatest honor and privilege.
2) I love what music can do. Music has been a tool for me all throughout my life. My life's work and spreading my message: "We're all equal. There is nothing like looking over a dance floor and watching people who are completely different yet in this moment blissfully united and spreading positivity. Music has the power to alleviate the way in which we fell and bring us together."

DJ PROFILE:

I actually taught myself to DJ. I bought myself my first Stanton turntables and practiced blending and mixing for about 3 months tops (2003). I felt "ready" and bought myself new Technics. When it was time to choose a DJ alias, it was perfect to use my son's name - Nick: D.J., last name Sparks. However, I spell my DJ name

"DJ Sparx" .

The rest is history. I also gained tremendous experience and skills with playing the piano for 13-14 years. In my early years, I was in an orchestra band - playing the Xylophone & Timpani drums in a prestigious jazz band - playing the drums and keyboard Synthesizer (two). Dancing has always been in my blood (hip-hop, salsa. merengue, swing, boogie, traditional Filipino dances, Ol'skool B-girl - O.G. Jedi Clan girl; now known as Mindtricks & IL'a-del (Jedi girls & Danger Zone). I was exposed to music/shows/performances/concerts/etc since I was a young child. I've met interesting people (famous and not) and I got to share my love of music.

MUSICAL INFLUENCES:

I grew up listening to many different forms of music that all influence me today and in time my musical tastes just kept expanding. Basically, that's the story. Music has always been a huge part of my life and I know that it will continue to inspire me, move me and hopefully move those around me!
- Thank you DJ Cutso (my first DJ mentor/Fingerbangerz), Textbook - a musical producer GENIUS and my boo, I love you so much! Alma Bailon - can this girl GROOVE or what!, DJ Goldenchyld (Fingerbangerz), Special K (my first female DJ influence in my life), DJ Fuse1, DJ Verz (SideWok Radio), DJ Dynamix (3-Style Attractions), DJ Wishboogie (O.G. Jedi Clan), my boys Jedi Clan (now known as Mindtricks) - you boys can still ROCK the floor - for your musical influences.

FINAL NOTE:

Big respect goes out to all female DJs of color and especially those who paved the way!

Favorite Artists

R. Kelly
He produces, sings, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and a proud father of a little girl. Much love.

Maxwell
This firmly rooted, timeless foundation of soulful rhythm & blues, will catch any ladies' heart in an instance.

D'Angelo
It was clear from the jump that there was something about D'Angelo. He shows precocious musical talent, where he began playing the piano at the age of five. Much props!

Brian McKnight
His remarkable talent as a singer, writer, musician, producer and arranger is so dynamic, so complete that on occasion, especially at this era of pop posers and music video vamp, he appears nothing less than an enigma.

Eric Benet
Eric Benet also co-produced and co-wrote his album, "A Day In A Life". Will be looking forward for his next project.

Favorite Albums

Musiq - Aijuswanasing
Smooth and funky....that's what I like.

Donell Jones - Where I Wanna Be
Great R&B, slow jam tracks in this album. This is a must, ladies.

Eric Benet - A Day In A Life
If you like Maxwell or Sade, you should give this album a listen. Simply add fine wine and soft lighting for the ultimate smooth groove experience.

R. Kelly - R
This double album "R", shows he has skills as a writer, producer, arranger and singer.

Love Jones Soundtrack - Love Jones Soundtrack
Not only is this one of my favorite movie of all times, but also a great soundtrack. I simply just LOVE IT!
