Jacob & John Di Maio

One little kid born in Queens (July '00) & a big kid from Brooklyn (Nov '67), spinning the rich history of New York underground music. Most of the bands we play hail from around here...others relocated and made New York their own. But the linear link through all these eras and sounds is the city itself. It binds Silver Apples to TV On The Radio. At first we thought it could sound like a train wreck to play Victim In Pain era AGNOSTIC FRONT into THE PHENOMENAL HANDCLAP BAND and SHARON VAN ETTEN, but it sounds perfect to us (though Jacob prefers a few more TINY MASTERS OF TODAY tracks on the ever-changing playlist). Sonic Youth, Velvets/Lou Reed, Ramones, NY Dolls, Suicide, Blondie, Talking Heads etc... all these vital artists are almost invisible on the local NY radio, save for the occasional "Walk On The Wild Side." Fuck, the Ramones get more airplay at ballparks than they do on radio. As foul as "classic rock" is, any NY station that claims that format should be playing those bands as their foundation, rather than LA dogshit like Van Halen & The Eagles. Music radio should have some local identity, being the "public airwaves." None of these crap bands, or "90s gold" for that matter, mean anything to Jacob and his generation, and John is no hurry to become an old fool speeding toward irrelevance listening to cheap grunge knock-offs. I'll get nostalgic when I'm in the morgue. NYC UNDERGROUND RADIO now plays far more new stuff, as we always intended...about a 50/50 split of old and new. We're trying to add new bands as often as we can, because if terrestrial radio is going to ignore what is happening now in this town, other forms of media have to speak up, loudly. What's emerging from the city today is a scene as vibrant as any this NY has ever had, and as much a part of the living legacy as any band that emerged in 1976. If any new NY artists (or old ones) we've overlooked come to mind, please email us at jedimaio@aol.com. It's strictly music here. No DJ foolishness. That's not what you've tuned in for.
