I am the former host of the tropical music program "Son Del Caribe" on 89.9 WKCR in NYC (79-81) and at Live365.
After many years involved with tropical dance music, I have made a switch on Live365 to share another passion of mine - Latin Jazz.
The New York experience in the 70s and 80s rich with many sounds that crossed the air waves and uniquely available live in the many music venues like the Paladium, the Bottom Line, Roseland and Fat Tuesdays. You just had to open your ears and mind - at leaset for a salsero like me. Listening to the stories told by musical masters and local legends like Mario Rivera, Jose Mangual, Manny Oquendo, Fajardo, Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Mario Bauza, Tito Puente, Patato and Ray Barretto rounded off this experience and provided a glimpse into the world of Latin-Jazz. At the time, the fresh sounds of Valentin, the Gonzalez brothers, Torres, Sanabria and Maldonado were just starting to echo in music halls and making their marks, expanding further the cross-over experience.
In the rich tradition of NYC stations WBGO, WKCR and the former Riverside Broadcasting Group, I share with you my love for this genre. My goal is to continue a tradition started by them and devotes like Ray Barretto and Max Salezar, who would join me at WKCR to air their personal Jazz collections and talk about their experiences not as musician or insider, but as fans.
I hope you become a regular vistor at LQ and enjoy your stay as much as I enjoy bringing the LQ experience to you.
