Broadcaster Comments

The music of the 1920s and 1930s has a lightness and a vitality totally lacking in other musical realms. Also, it could be sophisticated, smart, and funny. It is not the over-processed, demographically-targeted pop of later years. It was all in one take, all on one mike, spontaneous, and totally in the moment. Hence it is still fresh, joyous, and new, even after 75 years.

Each weekend I will add the archive of the previous week's show, originally broadcast each Friday 8-10 PM ET on WHCL-FM 88.7 from Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. Playlists and original broadcast dates for each program may be found at my Radiola! blog. Owing to an upgrade in service, there is now much more programming to enjoy on this RADIOLA! stream.

FROM HORN AND MIC A three-hour RADIOLA! featuring my friend and neighbor Walt Mitchell playing and discussing his favorite recordings from over 50 years of collecting.

PETE'S TURN Pete Bianco filled in as host for this RADIOLA! and outside of the improvement you won't notice the difference.

STOMP OFF--LET'S GO! This RADIOLA! teems with great jazz, dance bands, and other delights.

BLUES EDITION This RADIOLA! is somewhat bluesy, mostly acoustic--and (excepting the middle set) all pre-1930.

BACK TO WORK This RADIOLA! admits it's time to get cracking again--right after Labor Day, that is.

LAST BLAST This RADIOLA! mourns the end of summer--but is determined to go out swinging.

DIDN'T HE RAMBLE! This RADIOLA! celebrates guitarist Lawrence Lucie, who died August 14 at age 101.
