Ok, here's my story: My family owned a record store for many years in New Orleans. I sort of grew up with the business and I was exposed to a lot of great music by my siblings. The first song I recall hearing and really becoming attached to was "This Boy" by The Beatles. I also got to hear songs by groups like "The Animals", "The Doors" and "The Dave Clark 5", among others. Eventually I discovered other musicians on my own and through various friends and other avenues. Sometimes I like a song because the lyrics "move" me, but sometimes it is the way a particular track makes me feel when I hear it. From an artistic standpoint, it really began with the sound of acoustic guitars and harmony vocals. In the last 10-20 years I've been more engaged with electric guitars, keyboards, blues, rockabilly, and instrumental guitar tracks. Since I have played guitar and sing now and then, I also have a sense of the process that musicians go through in creating and mixing a great song. The evolution of rock and roll since the 1960s is significant, so I have included just a few tracks from artists such as The Rascals, The Ronettes, The Hollies, and The Troggs. Most of the playlist is from the 1960's, 1970's, and some from the 1980's - present day, mostly straight ahead rock and roll. I do have some blues, folk/rock, americana, and a touch of r&b (The Spinners; Isley Brothers, War)mixed in the rotation occasionally. My station naturally features recognizable "hit songs", but, for every one of those, you will likely hear a "deep album track" or a fun cover tune. For example, you might hear "China Grove" by the Doobie Brothers, but you also get to hear "Tell Me What You Want (and I'll Give You What You Need"), too. Then you might really love "Come Together" by the Beatles, but I'll give you the same tune performed by Aerosmith, or something covered by Joan Jett. British Invasion era music (i.e., The Kinks) is prominent as well, but I have a lot of southern rock (Molly Hatchett, Allman Brothers, The Black Crowes, Wet Willie, et al) around as well. I go heavy on live tracks because sometimes the sound is just better due to technological advancements. I also happen to own a lot of live cds, and I often savor the energy that is captured from a band performing before a live audience. Sometimes those renditions take on a different arrangement that seems new and fresh. I also pride myself on trying to keep established artists relevant. If an established act like Jeff Beck has a new album, you might hear a brand new song. The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac have tons of established hit songs, but I'm going to spice things up with new material, too. Don't be surprised if you hear a new song by Foreigner, Lindsey Buckingham, or Stevie Nicks, just for starters. My station features some lesser known artists here and there as well ("Deer Park Ave", "SHEL", "The Decemberists,"Gretchen Menn," "Girl in a Coma", "The Wellspring","The Fray", "The Dollyrots", "Travis", "The Rescues", "The Kooks" and "Hayley Taylor" are just a few examples). Ideally, I want my listeners to hear some of their favorites, but also be pleasantly surprised with some of the more recent material, for example, tracks from Joe Perry's or Grace Potter's most recent albums.
