Modern road tripping has created other ideas and activities, none of which will be mentioned here. One of the original U.S. highways, Route 66, which became one of the most famous roads in America, originally ran from Chicago, Illinois, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California, before ending at Los Angeles, covering a total of 2,448 miles. The song came first and was written by Bobby Troup, originally recorded by the Nat King Cole Trio in 1946, and later by Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, The Manhattan Transfer and Depeche Mode. Route 66 was changed every time a new version of the song came out, changing its path and overall length. Business grew along the route, because of the different covers and growing popularity of the song. Some people later fought to the song and got in others faces threatening to get their "kicks". Route 66 was officially removed from radio station playlists on June 27, 1985 after it was decided the song was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the mindless crap that jammed up the airwaves in the 80's.
