The Unheard Music
KQAK, the Quake, occupied 98.9 FM on San Francisco's airwaves from mid-to-late 1982 to June 1985. The commercial but adventurous station played a mix of English pop (Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Bananarama), Two-Tone and ska (Madness, Bad Manners, Specials), American underground music (Dream Syndicate, R.E.M., The Replacements), '60s and '70s modern rock influences (Roxy Music, Lou Reed, Kraftwerk), local music (Robert Seidler, The Uptones, Romeo Void) and even some Dr. Demento fodder ("Time Warp," "Happy Boy," "Smoke Two Joints").
