What is Eclectic Set Programming? An Eclectic Set is defined as, "a selection of songs arranged in such a way that the grouping becomes a work in itself." The set really does become greater than the sum of the songs. Much attention is given to themes, eras, beat, key, rhythm, flow, and most importantly: relationships. Eclectic Sets heard here on Rare Waves over the last 7 years have consisted of predominantly melodic new age, ambient, progressive rock, and jazz fusion music. I've also included what I call eclectic folk and eclectic female vocals. OK, so why do I use the word "eclectic" a lot? Well, it describes my musical tastes, for one. More importantly, it describes a format style that I use to select music for the show. It's music that that has a certain special sense to it; a vibe; a mood; a feeling. Lately, as I go thru my music library, I'm drawn more and more to eclectic female vocals. This includes female vocalists that fall into the, folk, alternative, jazz, new age, electronic, and even some pop and oldies genres. There's plenty of great stations playing female vocal artists, old and new, pop and alternative, popular and obscure. While there may be some overlap with these stations, I don't plan to copy any format or genre. As I make notes about music in my library, I find certain songs by certain female vocalists, which could be a solo artist or part of a group, really move me. I started experimenting with creating playlists with these artists and, in testing, found the songs have a similar effect on others. Through the end of 2010, I will be adding more of these songs, and pulling some of the older material out of my playlist. I will also be providing information about the artists and links to their websites on my website. Until the transition is complete, I will not be taking any suggestions for songs or artists as I need to concentrate on the material I already have.
