RADIOthen.com presenting RADIOthen: VARIETY...American network radio programs from the GOLDEN AGE of radio broadcasting. Yes, it's Old Time Radio again on RADIOthen.
The old-time radio era, sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Radio, refers to a period of radio programming in the United States lasting from the proliferation of radio broadcasting in the early 1920s until the 1950s, when television superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming and radio shifted to playing popular music. During this period, when radio was dominant and filled with a variety of formats and genres, people regularly tuned into their favorite radio programs. In fact, according to a 1947 C. E. Hooper survey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners. RADIO then Variety Internet station presents many of these broadcasts, primarily from the 1930's through the 1950's when the age of magnetic recording tape began. Many network broadcasts were recorded on the west coast of the USA from Eastern time live broadcasts so these programs could be aired in evening pacific time. Many programs were prerecorded or "transcribed" on electrical transcriptions before broadcast. Others were prepared for transcriptions by the AFRTS radio stations of the US military. The American Forces Network (AFN) is the brand name used by the United States Armed Forces Radio and Television Service for its entertainment and command internal information networks worldwide. The AFN worldwide radio and television broadcast network serves American servicemen and women, Department of Defense and other US government civilians and their families stationed at bases overseas, as well as U.S. Navy ships at sea. AFN broadcasts popular American radio and television programs from the major U.S. networks. It is sometimes referred to as the Armed Forces Network. AFRTS, American Forces Network and AFN are registered trademarks of the U.S. Department of Defense. It is based out of Fort George G. Meade in Maryland.
