About Randye Jones

Greetings! I welcome you to Afrocentric Voices Radio. I'm a doctoral student studying Vocal Literature--especially Spirituals, so this station has become an outlet for my research and writing. Hope you enjoy the music on the station as much as I do!

Welcome to Afrocentric Voices Radio!

Programming on Afrocentric Voices Radio includes recordings of vocal music by historical African American composers like William Grant Still, Margaret Bonds and H. T. Burleigh and vocalists such as Marian Anderson and Paul Robeson. There are also performances of works by contemporary composers such as Anthony Davis and George Walker and singers Denyce Graves, Lawrence Brownlee, Florence Quivar and Darryl Taylor. And, of course, you will hear great vocalists, including Leontyne Price, Jessye Norman, Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry, Kathleen Battle and others who have long achieved international fame.

Whether operas, oratorios or art songs, or whether accompanied by single instrument or by large choral or instrumental ensemble, the recordings share the common presence of the glorious solo voice.

Each day from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Central Time, we offer selections focusing on a specific theme--click on the Full Schedule link above for details. Our Sunday mornings are filled with Sacred Sounds from 8:00 until 11:00 a.m. Central Time, when African American vocalists lift up historical and contemporary Classical music from the Christian tradition.

If you have suggestions for a theme or recordings to feature, contact Randye Jones at rljones@afrovoices.com.

If you would like to donate a commercially produced classical recording featuring solo vocal music performed or composed by an African American, I would be happy to consider it for addition to the station's playlist. Please send donations to: PO Box 281, Grinnell, IA 50112.
